Rescuing Shadowheart during the opening sequence of Baldur's Gate 3 is one of the earliest decisions players face aboard the Mind Flayer Nautiloid ship. Freeing her from her pod not only secures a reliable cleric companion early in your journey, but it also establishes a strong foundation for her long-term personal quest line. Follow these step-by-step instructions to successfully break her out of captivity and recruit her to your party.

Locating the Pod and Eldritch Console

As you explore the central chamber of the Nautiloid, you will discover Shadowheart trapped inside a glowing mind flayer pod. Interacting directly with the pod will reveal that it cannot be opened by physical force alone. Nearby, you will notice an Eldritch Console that controls the mechanisms binding the pod shut.

To activate the console properly, you must search the adjacent room for a missing component. Proceed through the eastern doorway into the next compartment to find a dead thrall lying on the floor. Searching the thrall's inventory will yield an Eldritch Rune, which is essential for unlocking the console.

Operating the Console to Release Shadowheart

Return to the main pod chamber with the Eldritch Rune in your inventory. Interact with the Eldritch Console once again and choose the dialogue option to place the rune directly into the socket. Placing the key inside activates the console's internal arcane mechanisms.

Once the console powers up, place your hand upon the warm surface and attempt a wisdom skill check. Successfully passing this check allows you to command the pod to open, safely releasing Shadowheart from her imprisonment. She will immediately express her gratitude and join forces with your team for the remainder of the escape.

Alternative Methods and Beach Recruitment

If you fail the skill check or choose to bypass the pod entirely, Shadowheart can still be recruited later. Following the crash of the Nautiloid ship, you will find her lying unconscious along the Ravaged Beach near your starting position. Waking her up allows you to invite her into your adventuring party right away.

If you miss her on the beach, she will re-appear outside the overgrown ruins further down the shoreline. Continually ignoring her will eventually lead her to the Emerald Grove, where you can recruit her through standard dialogue checks. However, freeing her directly on the Nautiloid yields an instant boost to her approval and unlocks unique early dialogue options.
